Further Afield - Liberec (2 hours)

Liberec is the second largest city in the Bohemia region and the fifth largest in the Czech Republic.

Liberec is probably most reknowned in the Czech Republic for it's dominant Ještěd Tower which was built in 1968. The tower has two main functions - the upper part is used to transmit television signals, while the lower sections contain a hotel and the tower restaurant. It is thoroughly worth having a look at because of the 360° views you have of the surrounding landscape. More information can be found on Ještěd Tower by following that link.

Liberec town centre contains a large collection of 19th Century buildings - such as the town hall, opera house and the Severočeské Muzeum - and this is due to the large expansion during this era.

Liberec is home to the first zoo built in the Czech Republic in 1919. Today the zoo contains about 143 species of animals and specialises in the breeding of rare and endangered animals. More information about the zoo can be found on the Liberec Zoo Travel Guide.
